IT IS TODAY

This day is the best day.
It is better than all the other days.
It is today.

They were good, but they didn’t stay.
This day is the best day.
The wall calendar will sing of May,
The clock face will sing of seven.
A day will say it is made of days
But this one looks like heaven.
This day is the best day,
It is better than the rest of the days.
It is today.

This tree makes the same pattern
Against the white sky.
Do not presume to speak for me.
I was there and I did not cry.
This day is the best day,
It is better than all the other days.
It is today.

You must put these memories away
Quietly. There is nothing to say.
It was only stuff arranged in a certain way.
It all ends in oblivion, even the faces you loved.
It all ends in oblivion, even the faces you loved.
Tell me this day is the best day.
Tell me it is better than all the other days.
Before I turn away.
Tell me today.

No. “Today” is not “now” but eternal. The other days “didn’t stay.”

Tom! It’s now 8:30 a.m., and here are my corrections, as promised last night.

        l. In graf beginning, “At any rate,” in third line from bottom, the last word, “no,” should be italicized,

        2. In next graf, beginning, “Remembering that same teen-age time,” four lines down, the word “that” should be italicized in phrase, “Now, that surely Mrs.”

        3. In graf beginning, “In his homily,” seven lines down, the name “Sammuto” should be spelled with a capital “Z,” making it “Mrs. Zammuto”

        4. In graf beginning, “But I got another chance,” the last word on first line should be “bare” with a “b,” not “n”

        5. In graf beginning, “Well, it may be believed,” in next to last line, please put the word “he” between “as” and “tried,” making it “as he tried to lead mass for one or…”

        6. In graf beginning, “It takes us longer to get over,” six lines down, first word should be “things.” Please take out the “r”

        7. In graf beginning, “My meighbor was taken,” three lines down, next to the last word on the line should be “outfit” with a “t” in the middle.

        8. In same graf, 12 lines down, in sentence, “i was doing this trip on a shoestring,” the word “I” should be capitalized, of course

        9. in same graf, 7 lines up from bottom, the word “religion” has an extra “i” in it. Please delete!

        10. At end of last sentence, on the bottom line, ending with “Flat Earth” Society proponent, I need to say a few words about “politics.” How about just, “In politics, I am a registered Democrat and tend to see things simply.”

        11. In last graf, beginning, “Now, to leave that whole subject and go on to another, there should be a comma after the word “another,” and seven lines down, that should be “my
life’s companion would have had to be a…” The word “be” is missing and needs to be put in!

        12. In third line from bottom, Phoebe Nicholls’ name should be spelled with two “l”s.

        13. In graf beginning, :Yes, I am bokish,” five lines down, the word “that” and the word “half” should be italicized in the phrase, “not that bad, but half that bad”

        14. In graf beginning, “I finally forgave most of the choir members,” last sentence should be, “I can live with that!” with the letter “I” capitalized.

        15. In the graf beginning, “The term ‘community of saints,” the name “Trilling” is misspelled, needs an “i” before the “ng”

        16. In graf beginning, “Minsk and Pinsk are two cities..” four lines down, the letter “r” in “Russia” needs to be capitalized.

        17. Same graf, in fourth line from bottom, we need a space between words “and” and “Pinsk”

Finally a few mistakes in my first essay about going to my high school reunion and finding Rhonda there…..

          1. In graf beginning, “Then came Saturday night!” Four lines down, “were” should be “where,” with an “h” needing to be added.

          2. In graf beginning, “I also found the book contained..” two lines up from bottom, the words “practically
          reenacted” should be italicized.

And that’s all, folks! Thank you!
