SAFETY OR LOVE

Image result for abstract painting of a crimson curtain

Choose safety or love.

If you think it’s safe, it’s not love—

She only pretends to love you.

The more you love her,

The more she turns to safety—

Where paintings and words are a blur.

I know, because she reached out to me

When you thought she was loving you.

I was ugly. Tomorrow came to her safely

Because I didn’t love her. She had no doubts. She knew.

You only want to be certain,

Now, in your grief,

Why she disappeared behind the curtain

And what she does behind the curtain now,

And if love is love, how

Love can hurt and betray all love.

The problem is, you want to be certain

If she was certain

When she disappeared behind the curtain

And was she running from love?

You loved her. She was certain.

And yes she was.

    If You Were a Cult

If you were a cult, I would join. I would get rid of all my possessions. I would fast for eight days. I would rename the days of the week. I would wear your old clothes, if you were a cult. I would pledge allegiance to your flag. I would learn your songs, all the words. I would cook your meals, clean your clothes, wash your dishes, raise your children, park your car. I would take a new name and take off my clothes if you were a cult. I would alleviate all anathema. I would wait for the end of the world. with you. if you were a cult.
