Those who lack faith are certain
faith is not the way. It is not just certainty
which makes them what they are—
the means they take to be certain is profound—
even as they become older
and slightly embarrassed by sound—
and less certain every day—
since what they are certain of
is certainty—not tranquility nor love.
I am not trained in the disciplines of love,
the certainties of ceremonies for Baptist or Jew.
I am still more uncertain. I reject nothing,
as long as the rumor persists. I mean that rumor about you.
